Mr Matthew Popplewell is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Assistant Professor at Russell's Hall Hospital and the University of Birmingham, working in a 50/50 clinical academic post. He trained in vascular surgery across the West Midlands, holds an MD from the University of Birmingham, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Vascular).
Matthew's research centres on the endovascular management of chronic limb-threatening ischaemia. Since 2014 he has worked on the BASIL trials and now serves as Chief Investigator for BASIL-2 and BASIL-3, comparing endovascular and surgical revascularisation strategies for severe limb ischaemia; BASIL-2 was published in The Lancet and BASIL-3 in the BMJ. He is a co-applicant and pillar lead on the £10m NIHR ROSSINI platform trial and contributes data to national and international guideline development, including NICE and the Global Vascular Guidelines. He has authored textbook chapters on infra-inguinal endovascular revascularisation, including in Rutherford's Vascular Surgery.
Alongside his clinical and research work, Matthew is Academic Surgical Trainee Programme Director for NHS England (West Midlands) and has co-developed a national mentorship programme for early-career vascular consultants with the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and regularly speaks at national and international meetings.
