The British Society of Endovascular Therapy is a recently formed Society with the aims of promoting endovascular treatment and research in patients with vascular disease. The members of the Society are mainly drawn from the disciplines of Interventional Radiology and Vascular Surgery, with a Council that reflects these specialities (the members of BSET council and their responsibilities are outlined below). The British Society of Endovascular Therapy is delighted to announce three 6-month fellowships to support dedicated training in endovascular surgery within the United Kingdom. The fellowships will offer the opportunity for successful candidates to spend a 6 month period within a Unit in the United Kingdom to improve their endovascular skills as applied to the treatment of vascular disease. Training in a full range of endovascular techniques will be encouraged including percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, endovenous procedures, and the treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms. The Fellowships will be sponsored by Cook Medical, but will be awarded and administered through the British Society of Endovascular Therapy. Applications for the Fellowships will be encouraged from trainees in all related disciplines, with an interest in the endovascular treatment of vascular disease. Applicants will need to be members of the British Society of Endovascular Therapy.
The British Society of Endovascular training Fellowship programme will initially provide three 6-month Fellowships to be spent in vascular units within the UK. Support for these Fellowships will take the form of a salary for a 6 month period. The salary will be based on a Year 6 SpR working a 2B on-call rota in either Interventional Radiology or Vascular Surgery.
The Fellowships seek to provide support for dedicated training in endovascular therapy. Successful applicants will be given a choice of units in which to undertake their Fellowship. The British Society of Endovascular Therapy will be asking for proposals from individual units to host one of these Fellowships. It is expected that all successful centres will be able to offer dedicated training in endovascular therapy, both in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease and specifically in the treatment of abdominal and thoracic aneurysms.
It is anticipated that the three Fellowships on offer this year will be undertaken in three separate centres. Accreditation for the training programme will be the responsibility of the candidate, the centre involved, and the local Surgical Training Committee. BSET will be selecting potential centres for these fellowships by open application.
The Fellowships will be awarded by open competition, which will involve an application form (Appendix B) followed by competitive interview. It is expected that applicants will be senior trainees (SpR 5 or higher) in their relevant disciplines. It is anticipated that most applicants will be derived from the fields of Vascular Surgery or Interventional Radiology. Suitable candidates from other disciplines will be eligible to apply. The Fellowships will be advertised on the British Society of Endovascular Therapy website (www.bset.co.uk). Short listed applicants will be interviewed by a panel appointed by the British Society of Endovascular Therapy.
The successful candidates will usually be experienced in the treatment of peripheral vascular and aneurysmal disease. Candidates will be expected to meet senior trainees or have completed their training programme. The British Society of Endovascular Therapy wishes to appoint candidates who have a longstanding interest in the endovascular treatment of vascular disease, and aim to specialise in this therapy in their Consultant appointment.
Candidates should apply for the training Fellowships by sending a CV to marion@bset.co.uk. The subject line should read “BSET Fellowship application”. In addition to a CV the candidates should submit a 500 word statement describing how the fellowship would supplement your current clinical experience.
Closing date for applications is midnight 30 November 2011.
IMPORTANT NOTE: CV to be only 2 pages long
