Council Members

Rachell Bell

Miss Rachel Bell

Qualified from Guy's & St. Thomas' Hospital in 1994 and trained on the London South East Thames rotation. She was awarded an MS in 2005 for research into paraplegia and reperfusion injury following open and endovascular  thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair.

 

She was appointed to a Consultant post at Guy's & St. Thomas' Hospital in 2005 and is currently the Clinical Lead for Vascular Surgery. She is actively involved in the merger of the vascular units of  Guy's & St. Thomas' and Kings College Hospital, under the auspices of the Kings Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. Miss Bell has a particular interest in the open and endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysms

 

 


Mr Jon Boyle

 

Qualified from the University of Leicester in 1991. He trained in Leicester, Southampton and Portsmouth and was involved in the early development of EVAR within the UK, work that led to his MD thesis. He undertook a year of endovascular training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital prior to his appointment as Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge in 2002. 

 

He has active research interests in EVAR, outcome modelling and renal injury in vascular surgery, publishing extensively on these subjects. He has established an endovascular service for ruptured aneurysms in Cambridge and runs successful courses on EVAR for both elective and ruptured AAAs. Furthermore he is enthusiastic about training and is currently Programme Director for Core Surgical Training in the East of England, an MRCS examiner and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Cambridge.

 

 


Mr Tom Browne

 

Qualified from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.  As an undergraduate he spent time in Norway, Munich and Harvard, and undertook basic surgical training in Ireland, Baghdad, England and Wales. He undertook a Fellowship in surgery awarded from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and his Master's degree involved work in the fabrication of the small diameter vascular graft. 

 

He was awarded a travelling Fellowship to Australia in 1997, during which time he invented the Fenestrated Endovascular Aortic Graft.  Mr Browne now enjoys the work challenges of a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in the District General Hospital, Broomfield and St Andrews, Chelmsford, Essex.  He is involved with the varied roles of clinical supervision of a research fellow at Anglia Ruskin University, basic surgical training and the commercial and marketing wing of the hospital. 

 

He is also integrally involved in the twinning process of Broomfield and the university teaching hospital in Lusaka Zambia.

 

 


Mr Mike Jenkins

Qualified from Middlesex/UCH in 1989 as a Broderip Scholar and trained on the London North West Thames rotation.  He was awarded an MS in 1996 for research into restenosis after angioplasty, and has been involved in EVAR (with home-made devices) since 1994. 

 

After being appointed to a Consultant post in 2002 he now also holds the  Chief of Service position for cardiovascular surgery within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust; the first Academic Heath Science Centre in the UK. The unit acts as a tertiary centre for thoracoabdominal aneurysms and has the largest series of visceral hybrid cases in the world. Mr Jenkins is actively involved in education and training, and regularly proctor's cases as well as teaching on endovascular courses. 

 

 


Mr Ian Loftus

Trained in Leicester and was appointed Consultant Vascular Surgeon in 2004. He was appointed at St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust to help develop the tertiary referral endovascular, complex aortic and carotid practice. 

He also has an interest in endovenous techniques for varicose veins.  Mr Loftus has a background in vascular biology research, has published and presented numerous research papers and currently runs a clinical trials unit at St Georges. 

 

Mr Loftus is interested in teaching and training, and has sat on Regional Training Committees, the NHS Changing Workforce programme and The Council of the Association of Surgeons in Training. 

 

He is an examiner and Critical Care Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons and has recently co-edited a major book on endovascular surgery; he is also on the Editorial Board of the Journal 'Atherosclerosis'.  At present Mr Loftus is the Care Group Lead for Vascular Surgery at St Georges.

 

 


Mr Mark McCarthy

 

Studied Medicine at the University of Birmingham, having embarked on his early surgical training in the West Midlands. In 1995, Mr McCarthy moved to Leicester to undertake a period of formal research and subsequently obtained a PhD from the University of Leicester.

 

This led to him becoming a Lecturer in Surgery in Leicester and has been a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Leicester since 2002. Mr McCarthy is currently Training Programme Director for Core Surgical Training, on the Royal College of Surgeons of England Court of Examiners for the MRCS and the East Midlands VAC representative for the Vascular Surgical Society.

 

 


Dr Sumaira MacDonald

Qualified Glasgow 1991, trained in internal medicine, radiology & interventional radiology. She undertook an Interventional Radiology Fellowship (Glasgow 1998-2000), a Cook Fellowship (Leicester 1999) & an Endovascular Fellowship, (Sheffield 2000-2003). She was appointed Consultant Vascular Radiologist & Honorary Clinical Senior lecturer, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne in April 2003. Clinical/research interests include carotid stenting, embolic protection & peripheral vascular interventions.

 

She was a proctor & major recruiter for the ICSS & is on the steering and technical management committees for the ACST2 & is actively recruiting for this trial. She is also on the steering & technical management committees for the ECST2 & is on the Scientific Advisory Board for Medtronic/Invatec. She reviews for 14 journals, is on the editorial board of five and regularly lectures and publishes on carotid stenting. She is co-director of the March Course, An Introduction To Endovascular Procedures & Techniques.

 

 


Dr Richard McWilliams

Graduated from Trinity College Dublin and carried out pre-Fellowship surgical training at Hope Hospital, Salford and Wythenshawe Hospital Manchester, and radiology training on the Leeds/Bradford rotation. 

 

Dr McWilliams is a Consultant Vascular/Interventional Radiologist at Royal Liverpool University Hospital with a special interest in vascular imaging/vascular intervention and a particular interest in all aspects of standard and complex EVAR in the thoracic and abdominal aorta. He is actively involved in the training of endovascular surgery/interventional radiology.

 

 


Mr Olufemi Oshin

 

Currently a specialist registrar within the Mersey Deanery surgical rotation. After completing an undergraduate degree in Clinical Engineering and Materials Science, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Liverpool in 2004.

 

Following his basic surgical training in Merseyside, he spent two years in a research post at the Regional Vascular Unit in Liverpool before beginning his higher surgical training. As well as representing trainee views on the BSET committee, he is also Vice-President of the Rouleaux Club.

 


 


Mr Mark Pemberton

 

Has been a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Portsmouth for 10 years.  He qualified at Cambridge and Kings College Hospital and did his vascular training between Leicester, Nottingham and St Mary's Hospital, London.


Mr Willy Pillay

Trained in South Africa obtaining the Fellowship in General Surgery in 2008. This was followed by a period as a consultant in General Surgery, with a practice incorporating elective and emergency general surgery, and trauma. After a period at St Mary’s Hospital, London, he returned to South Africa to complete his training in Vascular Surgery, being one of the first to obtain the Post-fellowship Vascular Certification of the College of Surgery.

 

He has been at the Doncaster Vascular Centre since 2004, initially as Clinical Lead, and now as Clinical Director of Surgery. Willy has an interest in peripheral angiography, EVAR, and carotid surgery. He performs a regular session in the catheter laboratory carrying out diagnostic and therapeutic angiography, and in theatre performs on-table interventions and EVAR.

 

With an interest in teaching and training, he started the Doncaster Intermediate Surgical Skills course in 2007 and he has run courses on Basic Catheter Skills for Surgeons and Minor Surgery for General Practitioners. He is currently pursuing Post Graduate studies in Medical Education.

 

 


Professor Rob Sayers

 

Trained in Birmingham, Leicester and Adelaide and is Professor of Vascular Surgery at the University of Leicester. 

Professor Sayers has a particular interest in EVAR and the genetic variations that cause aneurysms.
