BSET Fellowships

BSET offers endovascular training fellowships, sponsored by Cook Medical. Each year the fellowship scheme provides 3 cardio-vascular trainees with the opportunity of acquiring new or more complex endovascular skills. The fellowship scheme works with the trainees, selected at competitive interview, indicating a unit of their choice to enhance their endovascular skills. Trainees are not allocated to a centre but are encouraged to choose which unit offers them the best match for their requirements.

Centres apply to be able to host a BSET fellow though an application form which seeks to ascertain case mix, training opportunities and collaboration between vascular surgery and vascular radiology. A list of the current Training Centres can be found by clicking the link on the left. Further applications are welcome.

The previous fellows have come from a wide geographical background that includes, Leicester, Liverpool, SE Thames, Hull, Wolverhampton and SW London.

2012/2013 applications are now closed.

Scope of Fellowships

The British Society of Endovascular training Fellowship programme will provide three 6-month Fellowships to be spent in vascular units within the UK.  Support for these Fellowships will take the form of a salary for a 6 month period.  The salary will be based on a Year 6 SpR working a 2B on-call rota in either Interventional Radiology or Vascular Surgery. The Fellowships seek to provide support for dedicated training in endovascular therapy.

Successful applicants will be given a choice of units in which to undertake their Fellowship.  The British Society of Endovascular Therapy will be asking for proposals from individual units to host one of these Fellowships.  It is expected that all successful centres will be able to offer dedicated training in endovascular therapy, both in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease and specifically in the treatment of abdominal and thoracic aneurysms.

It is anticipated that the three Fellowships will be undertaken in three separate centres.  Accreditation for the training programme will be the responsibility of the candidate, the centre involved, and the local Surgical Training Committee. BSET will be selecting potential centres for these fellowships by open application.

Application Process

The Fellowships will be awarded by open competition, which will involve an application form followed by competitive interview.  It is expected that applicants will be senior trainees (SpR 5 or higher) in their relevant disciplines.  It is anticipated that most applicants will be derived from the fields of Vascular Surgery or Interventional Radiology.  Suitable candidates from other disciplines will be eligible to apply. The Fellowships will be advertised on the British Society of Endovascular Therapy website (www.bset.co.uk).  Short listed applicants will be interviewed by a panel appointed by the British Society of Endovascular Therapy.

The successful candidates will usually be experienced in the treatment of peripheral vascular and aneurysmal disease.  Candidates will be expected to be senior trainees or have completed their training programme.  The British Society of Endovascular Therapy wishes to appoint candidates who have a longstanding interest in the endovascular treatment of vascular disease, and aim to specialise in this therapy in their Consultant appointment.

Application Procedure

Candidates can apply for a Training Fellowship by completing an application form which will include a 500 word statement describing how the Fellowship would supplement their current clinical experience, and also attaching a CV.

2012/2013 applications are now closed.
